Disclaimer on Autism Interventions

The information on this website is designed to support, not replace, the relationship that exists between you and your health care provider. The information has been written by non-medically qualified individuals, unless we specifically state otherwise. Any such information should therefore be treated with care.

The rating we provide for this intervention is based on the available scientific evidence published in peer-reviewed journals. This means that other sources of information, such as those on treatment web sites or personal testimonies which have not been through a rigorous process of examination by experts in the relevant field, are not included in our evaluation.

Our rating is not intended to act as a recommendation on whether a specific autistic person should or should not use this intervention. The outcome of any intervention will depend on a range of factors, including the individual's needs and abilities, and on the way in which the intervention is implemented.

Please see Process for Evaluating Studies for more information about how we evaluate the evidence for each intervention.

Please see our Terms and Conditions for more information about using this website.

Limitations

The effect of many interventions in autism will be influenced by a number of factors.

Results obtained under laboratory trials or controlled conditions may not be easily obtained in other settings such as the home or school. This may be due to any of a number of factors:

1. Failure to adhere to the methods (known as treatment fidelity)
2. Inadequate training of staff or inconsistency of response
3. Physical environment may differ
4. Stress either related to the autistic person or parent or carer
5. Poorly defined goals and outcomes
6. The variability of people on the autism spectrum
7. Placebo effects or bias
