Incidental Teaching and Autism Ranking: Insufficient/Mixed evidence

Status Research

There are a number of limitations to all of the research studies published to date. For example

  • All of the studies had a small number of participants (an average of 4) and used single case design methodology, such as a multiple baseline design.
  • One of the studies (Schepis et al, 1982) included participants with a range of conditions, only a few of whom (4) were autistic.
  • There were no controlled trials of any kind, randomised or not.
  • Many of the studies (such as McGee and Daly, 2007) were undertaken by researchers who were not independent of the intervention being studied.  Those researchers may therefore have been biased towards the intervention, however unconsciously.
